2013 Flora Awards

Los Angeles Glassblowing was comssioned to make the 2013 Flora Awards. Our clients at Case Western University in Cleveland, Ohio asked us to create an award that conceptually had to do with rebirth and the fluidity in life. The recipients of these awards were given honorary recognition for their work as influencial women, serving the needs of less fortunate women in the community. We cast blue glass to represent fluidity in water, then hand sculpted pink lotus flowers (in alignment with the company logo). The lotus flower is symbolic of fortune in Buddhism. It grows in muddy water, and it is this environment that gives forth the flower’s first and most literal meaning: rising and blooming above the murk to achieve enlightenment. If a lotus flower is pink, it refers to compassion and love. We finished the award by sandblasting the etched lettering and Flora Stone logo on the award.
